Twain is most noted for his novels Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (amongst other works), and his numerous quotes and sayings.It would be difficult to imagine a contemporary individual who is at once the best known author in the United States, the most popular stand-up comedian and monologist, and simultaneously the friend of presidents, artists, leading industrialists, and even European royalty. Yet in the last quarter of the 19th Century, that is who Mark Twain was. But it is not his popularity for which he is remembered. Mark Twain is today credited with being the author of the Great American Novel, the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. He enjoyed immense public popularity and his keen wit and incisive satire earned him praise from both critics and peers. Born in Maine, Longfellow lived for most of his life in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in a house occupied during the American Revolution by General George Washington and his staff.'))

His teachings directly influenced the growing New Thought movement of the mid 1800s. Considered one of the great orators of the time, Emerson\'s enthusiasm and respect for his audience enraptured crowds. His support for abolitionism late in life created controversy, and at times he was subject to abuse from crowds while speaking on the topic, however this was not always the case. When asked to sum up his work, he said his central doctrine was the infinitude of the private man.'))

She lived in New York and New Jersey. Harper\'s Magazine in 1861 published a poem she\'d titled The Picket Guard. Known almost immediately more by its opening line, All Quiet Along the Potomac Tonight, the poem was adapted to music and sung by soldiers on both sides in the Civil War. It was misattributed, sometimes to a dead soldier in whose pocket a scrap of paper had been found, sometimes to Southern writers. While she preferred Ethel Lynn Beers she may be found under Ethelinda Eliot Beers.'))

He became the highest-paid magazine writer of his day. For a time, he was the employer of former slave and future writer Harriet Jacobs. His brother was the composer Richard Storrs Willis and his sister wrote under the name Fanny Fern. Willis embedded his own personality into his writing and addressed his readers personally, specifically in his travel writings, so that his reputation was built in part because of his character. Critics, including his sister in her novel Ruth Hall, occasionally described him as being effeminate and Europeanized. Willis also published several poems, tales, and a play. Despite his intense popularity for a time, at his death Willis was nearly forgotten.'))
