Often featuring characters with disparate and extreme states of the mind, his works exhibit both an uncanny grasp of human psychology as well as penetrating analyses in the politics, social and spiritual state of Russia of his time. Many of his best-known works are prophetic as precursors of modern-day thought and preoccupations. He is sometimes said to be a founder of existentialism, most notably in \'Notes from Underground\', which has been described by Walter Kaufmann as the best overture for existentialism ever written. Dostoevsky himself, however, described his underground man as an example of nihilistic ideas taken to the extreme whose reprehensible personality is a vivid argument for the need for faith and Christ in the modern world.'))

Tolstoy is widely regarded as one of the greatest of all novelists, particularly noted for his masterpieces \'War and Peace\' and \'Anna Karenina\'; in their scope, breadth and realistic depiction of Russian life, the two books stand at the peak of realistic fiction. As a moral philosopher he was notable for his ideas on nonviolent resistance through his work \'The Kingdom of God is Within You\', which in turn influenced such twentieth-century figures as \'Mahatma Gandhi\' and \'Martin Luther King\'.'))

His novel \'Fathers and Sons\' is regarded as a defining work of 19th-century fiction. Turgenev portrayed realistically the peasantry and the rising intelligentsia in its attempt to move the country into a new age. Although Turgenev has been overshadowed by his contemporaries \'Fyodor Dostoevsky\' and \'Leo Tolstoy\', he remains one of the major figures of the 19th-century Russian literature.'))

He was born in the city of Nizhny Novgorod and died in Moscow. From 1906 to 1913 and from 1921 to 1929 he lived abroad, mostly in Capri; after his return to the Soviet Union he accepted the cultural policies of the time, although he was not permitted to leave the country.'))

A realistic playwright, along with Alexandr Ostrovsky he was responsible for first dramatising ordinary people in the theatre of Russia.'))

He was born in Simbirsk (now Ulyanovsk). In 1847, Goncharov\'s first novel, Obyknovennaia istoriia (A Common Story), was published. It was followed by Ivan Savvich Podzhabrin (1848), a naturalist psychological sketch. Between 1852 and 1855 Goncharov voyaged to England, Africa, Japan, and back to Russia via Siberia as the secretary of Admiral Yevfimy Putyatin. His travelogue, The Frigate Pallada (The Frigate Pallas), was published in 1858. His wildly successful novel Oblomov was published the following year. Fyodor Dostoyevsky, among others, considered Goncharov a noteworthy author of high stature. In 1867, Goncharov published his last novel - Obryv (The Precipice) (1869). Goncharov also wrote short stories, critiques, articles, and some memoirs that were only published posthumously in 1919. He spent the rest of his days absorbed in lonely and bitter recriminations because of the negative criticism some of his work received. Goncharov never married. He died in St. Petersburg.'))
